2018 New Year’s Resolutions for the Workplace

Jan 17

Just for a minute, stop what you’re doing. Take a moment to watch your neighbouring colleague as they pick and poke at a sad looking salad. Open your ears to the low pitched moans that echo across the office, closely resembling the cry of a forlorn whale.

Statistics indicate that 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February, meaning that your less-than-enthusiastic colleagues might reconsider their new lifestyle changes in just a matter of weeks. Soon the number of bullet journalists, early morning gym go-ers, and salad chewers may diminish as your office returns to the same state as it was in, well…last November.

However, if you’re still looking to make a difference in 2018, we’ve got a few ideas on how you can make some changes to improve your professional life.

Choose your words

Do you ever find yourself in a meeting, filling the silence with unnecessary chatter? Much as you may love the sound of your own voice, it’s time to think about what you’re really saying. Are you talking just for the sake of it? Or are your words actually offering something valuable to the matter at hand? You tell us.

Forgive yourself

We all slip up now and then, it’s what happens when you’re human. The important thing is to own up to your mistakes, show maturity, and then learn from them. Only then will you be able to stop making blunders and start making a difference.

Love your colleagues

“The workplace is for work”. Well…technically, yes. But, it’s also a great place for networking, meeting new people, and best case scenario; making friends for life. If you haven’t made the effort to have at least one conversation with everyone in your office, then make this your goal for 2018. Get to know your colleagues (and let them get to know you) if you want to be a better collaborator, communicator, and the first to hear about new opportunities.

Celebrate workplace success

Here’s a resolution for the entire team. Whether it’s a success on a small or large scale, it’s important to make a fuss and give yourself a pat on the back. Not only will a celebration keep everyone motivated and proud, but it’ll make a world of difference for strengthening team spirit.
Take a break
Nobody can give, 24/7. This year, keep your mind refreshed and your energy refuelled by taking a lunch break EVERY DAY, rain or shine. Don’t have the time? Make time! You’ll notice the difference in your standard of work.

Be inquisitive

There’s no such thing as a stupid question. No, seriously. For every second that you don’t know something, it’s an opportunity to learn and grow. Sooner or later people will be asking you the questions instead.

Repeat after us, “2018 is going to be GREAT”. If you’re looking to improve and take on new challenges then good for you! We wish you an amazing 2018 full of new opportunities and exciting projects.

And for those of you looking to get the ball rolling in a new workspace? We’ve got a variety of stylish and fresh offices just waiting for you and your positive workplace attitude.
