The beating cultural heart of the bustling capital, attracting businesses of all sorts from across the world.
London’s West End is almost the antithesis of the rather dry and serious City, filled with attractions, theatres, and plenty of other fun things to do. However, despite the surface-level differences, it shares a key similarity with the Square Mile – they’re both hugely important commercial centres and two of the most desirable office locations globally. Both have accordingly premium price tags when it comes to office space or desk rates.
A hotbed of beautiful listed buildings, home to one of the world’s foremost theatre districts, and packed with cafes, restaurants, and shops to enjoy, the West End is the perfect workspace location for businesses looking to enjoy the more chilled-out side of London. And, to seal the deal, the area benefits from outstanding transport connections that mean you can get anywhere else you need to be with ease.
Medieval London was made up of two cities – the City of London and the City of Westminster. The West End, although a largely colloquial term, is generally thought to be made up of large parts of the City of Westminster, along with parts of Kensington, Chelsea, Soho and other areas
It was developed gradually over the course of centuries, as a series of palaces town houses sprung up to form a fashionable district. The area has far too much history to cover in full, but among its most famous historical associations is its status as the home to the former royal seat at the Palace of Westminster, now the site of the iconic Houses of Parliament. It’s also, of course, home to the current royal residence of Buckingham Palace.
But, above even its royal associations, the West End is synonymous with theatre. In fact, it’s home to some of the oldest theatres in the world, with the oldest, Theatre Royal Drury Lane, dating back to 1663. The West End is also where the longest continuously running play – Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap – is performed, with regular shows put on since 1952.
The West End is one of the most well-known centres of business and commerce in the world, as well as being one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. It is in high demand with businesses across a huge range of sectors, from financial giants who have branched out from the City to tech pioneers.
Notable occupants of offices in the West End include an array of FTSE 100 businesses, BFI, Sony Entertainment, Google, and Facebook. But, although there’s a large corporate scene, the area is just as popular with start-ups and creative entrepreneurs.
It’s an area where you can rub shoulders with professionals from all walks of life, from C-Suite executives to stage actors, academics from Kings College London to the next big inventors.
Containing some of London’s most popular tourist destinations, along with the huge range of businesses that call the area home, the West End was always going to feature outstanding transport connections. It’s served by practically all of the major Underground lines, including the District, Circle, Central, and Victoria lines.
Some of the largest Underground stations are in the area, with high-throughput a daily feature at Covent Garden, Westminster, Piccadilly Circus and more. There’s plenty of choice for National Rail services, too, with services departing from Victoria and Paddington stations.
Covent Garden – A hugely iconic market, and one of London’s most touristed spots, Covent Garden is a one-stop destination for shopping, dining, and watching street performers.
Theatre District – The home of theatre in the UK, and arguably Europe, the Theatre District, or Theatreland as it’s sometimes known, provides a constant source of entertainment.
Oxford Street –One of the best-known shopping streets in the world, Oxford Street boasts more than 300 individual shops including the iconic Selfridges department store.
Carnaby – Full of independent boutique brands and pretty street scenes, as well as some designer flagship stores, Carnaby is a must-see alternative shopping district
Pre-Theatre Menus – Restaurants in the Theatre District are well-known for offering special ‘pre-theatre’ menus that serve as the perfect pit-stop before catching a show.
Covent Garden – Where better to enjoy a meal than sat in Covent Garden’s main piazza, where you’ll find countless restaurants and cafes to choose from.
