Your guide to Hoxton

A vibrant area within Shoreditch, just north of the City, offering trendy local amenities and outstanding transport connections.

Overview

Hoxton lies within Shoreditch in the London Borough of Hackney, just north of the City of London. It’s renowned for its influence on fashion and music, and has plenty of history to unravel. Home to art galleries, cool bars, and trendy eateries, it’s the perfect base for businesses looking for an office location that amplifies their creativity.

Hoxton features outstanding transport connections, plenty to see and do, and relatively low rental prices considering its central location. Those factors have attracted many creative businesses, transforming the area into a growing centre for exciting commerce.

Story

Hoxton’s history stretches back at least as far as 1086, when it appears in the Domesday Book as ‘Hogesdon’, meaning ‘fortified enclosure’. Perhaps most notably, it was in Hoxton that The Gunpowder Plot was discovered by Lord Monteagle.

The area was home to the working class for the vast majority of its history, but hosted a mix of commercial, industrial, and artistic landmarks that helped it to gain notoriety. It was the site of the former Britannia Theatre, the first Augustinian House since the Reformation, and Gainsborough Studios, where Alfred Hitchcock got his start in film.

Hoxton Market, now iconic, was first founded in 1687 and became a cornerstone of the local community. It fell into decline in the 1980s, but has since been rejuvenated and is again a great attractor to Hoxton.

Industry

Far from being known as a hub for business, Hoxton has largely thrived on its food, drink, and cultural scenes. Its these factors that helped stimulate the creative output of the area, and contributed to making Hoxton the destination it is today.

However, recent decades have seen it attract a growing number of notable businesses, with current residents including DesignMyNight, YO!, The Hoxton, and Native Design. There is a concentration of creative, nightlife, and design companies based in the area, drawn by Hoxton’s unique character and central location.

Transport

While there are no Tube stations within the formal boundaries of Hoxton, it’s still incredibly well-connected. Hoxton Station, just on the area’s Eastern boundary, is serviced by the London Overground, connecting you to all corners of the capital.

Old Street, just South of Hoxton, provides access to the Northern line, while also offering various National Rail links connecting you to the rest of the country. Combined, these two stations mean that Hoxton is within easy reach (and is easily reached) from far afield.
