The ‘Lane’ originated before 1161 – created by the Knights Templar to connect their properties in Holborn and the Temple area near the Thames. The road therefore predates much of the surrounding street network and reflects medieval land ownership patterns. Chancery Lane climbs gradually from Fleet Street up to High Holborn, following the natural rise of land away from the Thames valley. The ground falls away to the south and east toward the former valley of the River Fleet and the River Thames. Our John Street and Theobalds Road workplaces are very close to Chancery Lane tube.
Chancery Lane is a historic area in central London, located between Holborn and Fleet Street within the City of London. It has been closely associated with England’s legal profession since the Middle Ages, when it became the location of the High Court of Chancery and numerous legal chambers. Over the centuries, the area developed into the heart of the nation’s legal system and remains one of the country’s most important legal districts.
Commerce around Chancery Lane is strongly linked to legal, financial, and professional services. The area is home to law firms, barristers’ chambers, consulting businesses, and corporate offices. Its central location also supports a wide range of cafés, restaurants, hotels, and retail businesses serving professionals, visitors, and tourists. Excellent transport connections and proximity to the City of London make it an attractive location for business and investment.
Today, Chancery Lane successfully combines its historic legal heritage with a modern commercial environment. Historic buildings stand alongside contemporary offices, reflecting centuries of development. The area continues to play a significant role in London’s economy, serving as a centre for legal expertise, commerce, and professional services while preserving its distinctive historical character.
We combine interesting and beautifully designed workspaces with a strong focus on hospitality and experience. It’s why we won “Best workplace experience 2025” at the SME Business Awards. Explore what we offer…
Our workplaces near Chancery Lane are as ‘London’ as you get. You’ll find 4 traditional townhouses at 12-18 Theobalds Road which sits pretty much at the intersection of Grays Inn Road. They were built in around 1750 and have been the home of bakers, coachmakers, dressmakers and barrelmakers. Inside we’ve transformed them into smart office space, sitting across 5 floors and all interconnected behind the scenes. Inside you’ll find breakout spaces, kitchens, outdoor courtyards and more period architecture than you can take in.
The best kept secret is the annex space, it connects Theobalds Road to No. 2 John Street which sits on the neighbouring street. Clients in both buildings can access all of the amenities via the secret door that connects the two.
Chancery Lane is a Central Line stalwart and was once reliant on only this tube line – built way back in 1900 – to ferry in its commuters. Fast forward to the opening of the Elizabeth Line in 2022 and the landscape has changed – connecting the area to central London and it’s extremities with greater speed.
The Elizabeth Line tube at Farringdon is a 10-minute walk.
