If you’re after a neighbourhood feel rather than something overtly commercial, Farringdon could be for you. It’s east of Holborn and close to Clerkenwell, with a strong creative and media presence, and the Elizabeth line has only added to its attractiveness. The further you venture from the train station, the quieter it gets, but the area around the tube and the world-famous Smithfield Market you’ll find a stack of bars and restaurants covering all tastes. The only question you’re going to struggle with is whether you work from the Members’ lounge, your own office or the roof terrace.
Every May, Clerkenwell Design Week transforms the streets around Farringdon as more than 160 showrooms open across the neighbourhood for what has become one of the most significant design events on the global calendar. It’s perhaps not surprising then that Farringdon, and the broader Clerkenwell area, have been home to one of Europe’s highest concentrations of architects, designers and creative companies for decades. Jewellery businesses cluster around Hatton Garden to the south. Legal and professional services firms are well represented too, while tech and media companies have settled along the routes between the City and the West End. This is a part of London that takes design seriously as a discipline and a commercial force. And now that Farringdon station is on the Elizabeth line the area is sure to explode in popularity as it can claim to be one of the most connected points on the entire Underground network.
