Centuries ago, Southwark was a backwater – separated from London by the Thames and reachable only by ferry (those familiar with the area will know the ancient and famous ‘Ferryman’s seat’ which sits in the wall next to ‘The Big Greek’ restaurant).
Those days are long gone, with road, rail and tube growth Southwark and the South Bank are buzzing. Southwark is a hub for publishing, tech, media and creative businesses. It’s a deliberate choice for many, as it sits south of the Thames with Borough Market and the Shard nearby. We’ve got the perfect spot if you’re looking for City proximity but aren’t looking for City prices or City uniformity.
Five hundred years ago, Southwark was where Londoners went to misbehave. Theatres were banned in the city, but as Southwark sat outside it, it became London’s ‘entertainment’ district. The Rose Theatre opened in 1587, the Globe (part owned by Shakespeare) followed in 1599, while bear-baiting, brothels and coaching inns were hot on their heels. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the area was also home to the Clink Prison for six centuries. Today, it’s a different story; the neighbourhood has one of the busiest art galleries in the world (Tate Modern), one of the tallest buildings in Europe (the Shard) and a market that has been trading for more than 1,000 years (Borough Market). You’ll find publishing, tech, architecture, design and media businesses here alongside a thriving independent community in food and hospitality thanks to the Borough Market effect. Interestingly, the Globe is the only building in central London that’s allowed to have a thatched roof, after they were outlawed following the Great Fire in 1666.
We combine interesting and beautifully designed workspaces with a strong focus on hospitality and experience. It’s why we won “Best workplace experience 2025” at the SME Business Awards. Explore what we offer…
